Programs & Lessons

Specialized classical music training

At York Region Music Academy, piano, violin and cello are taught as distinct disciplines by performers who specialize in their instruments. Individual instruction brings together technical command, musical understanding and purposeful repertoire, with theory integrated into study at every stage.

Students may study for personal growth, RCM examinations, competitions, orchestra auditions or conservatory entry. Weekly 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons are offered in our Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Innisfil or Toronto studios, with the format tailored to each student's level and goals.

Violin & Viola

With Daniel Temnik & Samuel Choi

Daniel's and Samuel's studios support students from first lessons through advanced solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire. Early study establishes efficient performance, a reliable ear and a clear, flexible sound; technical demands deepen alongside musical maturity.

Experienced players refine tone, intonation, bow technique and interpretation while preparing sonatas, concertos and orchestral excerpts. Competition, examination and conservatory pathways receive focused, individualized coaching.

Areas of study
  • Bow technique, tone production and articulation
  • Intonation, shifting and vibrato
  • Scales, études and technical studies
  • Solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire
  • Phrasing, stylistic fluency and musical analysis
  • RCM, competition and audition preparation

Cello

With Andrew Park

Andrew's cello instruction connects secure technique with the instrument's solo, chamber and orchestral literature. Students develop a responsive bow arm, reliable left-hand facility and the ability to shape a phrase with clarity and depth.

As students progress, technical studies and repertoire are chosen to strengthen shifting, intonation and tonal range. Senior study may include sonatas, concertos, chamber music, orchestral excerpts and audition preparation.

Music Theory

Integrated musicianship

Music theory is taught as part of musicianship, linking notation, harmony and form to the repertoire students play and hear. Instruction develops analytical understanding, aural awareness and fluency with the written score.

Study is aligned with relevant RCM theory requirements and progresses into harmony, voice leading and analysis according to each student's level and goals. The result is a stronger foundation for interpretation as well as examination work.

Areas of study
  • Notation, rhythm and tonal organization
  • Intervals, chords and harmonic function
  • Voice leading and four-part harmony
  • Form, phrase structure and score analysis
  • Aural skills and practical application
  • RCM theory examination preparation

Chamber Ensembles & Orchestral Studies

Collaborative musicianship

Chamber music and ensemble study place individual technique in a collaborative setting. Students learn to shape a shared interpretation, respond to other parts and sustain rhythmic and tonal clarity within a group.

Faculty-coached duos, trios and quartets are formed where instrumentation and level align. Group theory study can complement instrumental lessons for students preparing RCM requirements.

Areas of study
  • Ensemble balance and blend
  • Score study and rehearsal practice
  • Intonation and rhythmic coordination
  • Chamber music interpretation
  • Leadership and collaborative listening
  • Studio recitals and performance
